Elderberry research and studies :

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study, a well known elderberry (sambucus nigra L. extract) product was shown to be effective against 10 strains of influenza virus, reducing the duration of flu symptoms to 3-4 days, and significantly increasing production of inflammatory cytokines.

Researchers concluded that “in addition to its antiviral properties, Sambucol Elderberry Extract and its formulations activate the healthy immune system by increasing inflammatory cytokine production”.

A study of 312 economy class passengers travelling from Australia to an overseas destination showed that elderberry has a significant effect on cold duration and symptoms and may help stabalise respiratory health during air travel.

Travellers using a standardised elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) extract from 10 days before travel until 4–5 days after arriving overseas on average experienced a 2-day shorter duration of the cold and a reduction in cold symptoms.

L-Lysine research and studies:

A double-blind, placebo controlled and randomized study on 108 healthy people found that that supplementing with 2.64 grams of lysine and 2.64 grams of arginine for one week lowered stress-induced anxiety and reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol

A 3 month trial on people in deprived villages in Syria found that consuming lysine-enriched flour (4.2 grams of lysine per kilogram of flour) reduced anxiety scores in males with very high stress levels, and reduced cortisol levels in women.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on 24 healthy elderly male and female subjects given either 20mg zinc per day; 20mg zinc and 500mg of lysine per day; or a placebo for 2 months found that zinc + lysine supplementation can reduce infection rate by increasing zinc level and CD4* count. Researchers concluded that lysine may therefore support zincs role in boosting the immune system.

*CD4 cells are white blood cells that fight infection. CD4 count therefore is an indication of how well the immune system is functioning.
